Brand Story

Monnaluna was founded here in Florence, Italy in 2009 through the will and creativity of Giovanna Flavia Bruno in her desire to present, under a modern light, the humanistic theme in fashion accessories, typical of the Florentine Rennaissance. Their core product is fashion jewelry and Monnaluna is an ideal and romantic name. “MONNA” in the Italian language means lady. In the past, the etymology of “mona” was tied to the Latin term “mea domina” which means “my lady”; “LUNA” means moon, so Monnaluna means romantically Lady Moon.

Monnaluna has decided on the «Made in Florence» philosophy. This means that not only do expert Florentine artisans make our pieces, some right here in our workshop near Palazzo Pitti, but also the materials that we select are from 0 Km in and around, Florence and the whole of Tuscany with great care in selecting procedures and collaborators that insist on respect for the environment and for workers.

Monnaluna is synonymous with elegance, and quality, important characteristics of the unique Florentine taste for beauty. The true Renaissance inheritance transferred into our fashion proposals. The style of Monnaluna is adapted to a modern version of some geometrical filigree designs. The inspirations come from the Renaissance period with the humanitarian theme of embellishing through harmonious geometric designs.

Monnaluna presents the full collections twice a year: FW and SS. With some new pieces to spruce up the in-between. The collections are presented, in our showroom, or at one of the fairs that we attend. Monnaluna has been at HOMI in Milan, Italy; Bijorhca and Première Classe in Paris, France; CAF in Almaty, Kazakhstan; Hangzhou Craft week and Guangzhou Fashion Week in China, and we will be present in more in the near future. We have confirmed through these events, the interest in our style and in our unique personalization concepts for long-term business.

Helix Collection

The inspiration for this collection comes from when I observed nature with its tornado-like phenomena or when water filters down a tube, the spiral movement is very soft and fascinating.

Dew Drop Collection

This collection is always inspired by nature. After a rain, my walk in the woods (I really like the smell of the woods after the rain), I noticed the droplets of rain on the leaves and the shapes they had as they came down. They also captured the sunlight in a brilliant way.

Medici Sphere

Inspired by the Medici family which has the spheres as an emblem of their shield. The spheres of these products shown are particular as they have "caged" crystals in crowns welded together creating very special pendants.

Monete e Croci

Coins are icons of good luck in many places in the world and mine are replicas of coins from ancient Rome. Instead, the cross has always been an important and fascinating symbol. Each cross I create is dedicated to a city. The reason I dedicate a city name to each cross is that Italy - all of Italy - has always had a history linked to the church and to this symbol.

Circle Delight Collection

In different cultures in the world, the shape of the circle has represented perfection, harmony and repetition since ancient times. The life cycle of each of us often starts from a point to go a long way and then find ourselves again at the beginning but with a lot of experience accumulated along the way. The circle is life.

This collection is something most unique and definitely a statement piece with that regal touch. The earrings propose a unique design with a top stud that resembles the Iris flower of the Medici family.

What are the main features of Monnaluna products?

Giovanna Flavia Bruno

Monnaluna is synonymous with handmade items with a very high degree of personalization so that each piece can be considered catered to the individual taste of the women wearing it. The pieces are made of brass, soldered (some pieces are also made with the lost wax system and therefore involve creating molds and designs in wax and casts, etc)

Which series of Monnaluna do you like best and why?

Giovanna Flavia Bruno

One of the Collections I love the most is the Crosses and Coin Collection. The cross because is imprinted in the history of Italy and of the Renaissance specifically. It is used as adornments for buildings (and not only in or on Churches), and as adornment for people so it is a very important element with emotional connotations and I believe that accessories should be the "loudest" element of our emotions which is why I believe in personalizing them. The coins instead are fun, remind us of our Roman background (meaning the Roman Empire) and I believe in their good luck too which helps always but especially at this time!

How do you balance the material and cost?

Giovanna Flavia Bruno

The cost of materials is obviously an important component of the pieces, especially the gold plating process since gold has hit new highs in this pandemic. But of course, the most important cost is the time dedicated to making each piece... since they are made, one by one, without a mold that just stamps out the pieces, well, you can imagine.

Florence has a long tradition in goldsmith design, what do you think of the goldsmith craftsmanship spirit in Florence?

Giovanna Flavia Bruno

Florence has a very old tradition for goldsmithing, but for all artisan crafts in general really, not only goldsmithing. That being said, I fear for the arts at this time as already before this dire moment, we artisans were having issues with survival and adding that to the fact that tourists in cities like Florence and Venice are like the air we breathe .... well, we are gasping for air. It is a very difficult situation globally, but for certain those cities, like ours that depends HIGHLY on tourists are even more in difficulty. And the arts are what will drive us out of this storm so I strongly hope that more attention will be brought to the arts and the artisans.

What are your next projects?

Giovanna Flavia Bruno

My next projects involve trying to put attention to the artisans and also create visual content that allows us to reach out to the public while we await the green light for international travel again. I am trying to gather more attention by promoting the artisans on my street which connects Piazza Santo Spirito and Piazza Pitti which are two important squares with lots of history. But it is not easy since many tourists are familiar with the traditional locations in Florence, on the other side of the Arno River. This side, our Oltrarno side, is indeed the HUB of the Authentic Artisan goods so I hope we will get the attention we deserve.
