Preface

Sun-penetrations

Sun-Penetrations are photographs and video of beams of the sun, which penetrate externally into our private inner space, through partly closed windows, curtains, doors, holes, or cracks.

The sun finds its way to penetrate our inner space from the sun to the earth at a mesmerizing speed of less than ten minutes. When we see it with our eyes and feel the warmth of the sun on our bodies it is between ten thousand and fifty million years.

Whatever situation we are in or being faced with, this power source will always be there to shine a light on us—to let us know there is life.

Forty DAYS

Quarantine: 40 Days of Isolation was created during the pandemic COVID-19.

Quaranta Giorni (forty days) is an Italian medical term derived from the plague epidemic in the fourteenth century. During this time, all ships had to remain in the port for forty days and the crew was not allowed to leave the ship. This was done to reduce the spread of a possible infection.

For forty days, I sent to fellow humans in lockdown a photograph of my ongoing series: Sun-Penetrations. With the sun as the bringer of life. And a light in a moment of darkness. I started my art project on March 23, 2020, and I distributed the last photo online on May 1, 2020.

What was the inspiration for your work in the exhibition?

 Kim Engelen

When I was at Park Schönefeld during Documenta 13 (2012).

I went out jogging, and when I came back, I sat on a chair. And this beautiful ray of sun hit my leg.

Warm and embracing. Seemingly happy and eager to see me and fall on me. Yet strangely, it made me feel utterly lonely.

Since then, I became fully aware of these, what I call, Sun-Penetrations.

Sun-Penetrations penetrate externally into the inner space, through windows, curtains, doors, glass, holes, or creaks. And I capture them in photographs and 1-minute videos.

What do you think is the symbolic significance of the "sun" in painting or photography?

 Kim Engelen

For me, the sun is the bringer of hope and strength.

The photographs and 1-minute videos of the usually ephemeral Sun-Penetrations, are the beautiful expressions of how old and strong nature is.

Sun-Penetrations show me how insignificant I am. And how utterly unimportant my heavy emotions are. —In the light of a catastrophe, they are futile. Since the sun has indeed the power to destroy us easily. Without the sun all life on earth would dissipate within minutes.

Sun-Penetrations contain contradictions; because of the comforting effect and tactile warmth, the sunbeams give. And at the same time the profound feelings of loneliness they can denote by showing up.

The beautiful radiating lights full of life shine on floors, matter, objects in a state of halt—and thus loss of progress. And therefore with their mere presence illuminate the other side of life. Highlighting death lurking in the shadow.

In your opinion, from the physical or psychological perspective, will art experience "quarantine" like humans?

 Kim Engelen

The sunbeams are, on the one hand, positive, nurturing, warming, spiritual, and comforting. And the Sun-Penetrations videos can remind of some form of spiritual meditation.

On the other hand, they exhume feelings of melancholy, because Sun-Penetrations, move on full stop on the opposite. And shine onto something that stands still—either physically or psychologically. Which is in a vacuum, without movement, and is because of this in a pitiful state.

All the time that the sunbeam was traveling towards earth she was alone, yet completely free. Traveling a huge distance to meet her destination. We are talking about millions of light- years.

And then she arrived at her destination. Was she happy?

We are so different—the sun and humans. Maybe she wanted to meet her reason for living. That she could feel important— which she is.

Pure romance. Since this meant the end of her travel and the death of that particular Sun-Penetration. All that is left is the memory of her.

How do you consider the influence of the pandemic brings to art?

 Kim Engelen

Because of COVID, we have become even more afraid of people. Since the "other" could contaminate us. How sad to be afraid for laughter, of singing, afraid to be too close.

It seems that we have lost an important part of humanity. Of connecting.

But for children who grow up now, it is simply their reality. Like social media is already the reality for millennials. Yet, like the flip side of a coin, it does bring good things too.

For example, showing art via the VR experience.

You are doing something quite remarkable and new. You are creating an additional opportunity to see and experience art—an online exhibition via VR.

It becomes related to the "quarantine" yet again on another level.

Similar to art. The sun is for everybody. Yet you feel the Sun-Penetrations by yourself. You “see” and “experience” them. The physical and psychological. It’s about your observations and thoughts.

How do you think art will contribute to humans in the fight against the epidemic?

 Kim Engelen

I hope this art-series will give people hope and strength.

Some people have lost loved ones. Some might be afraid of the future. Some feel they have lost their freedom to move freely around people. In general, people might have become more afraid. And some traumatized.

And the cruel fact is that life goes on. And that is also a gift. Because whatever happens, how awful it is, there will be a new day. The sun does rise. The sun warms us and nurtures us.

She lets us know we are not alone.

For me, art is soulful. It can give heart. And because of the diversity of art, you could perhaps feel less different. Art can help us re-connect.

I hope my Sun-Penetrations resonates with (some) people. That they can feel understood and also strengthened. Finally, the sun does not discriminate. Everybody is getting shone on. Everybody is mutually important.

Quaranta Giorni,
