Preface

"Between Light and Shadow: The Photo-Poetic Heart of Dr. Ng Sing Yee, the White-Robed Doctor"

"Photography is the story I fail to put into words." — Destin Sparks

Between the pounding pulse and the rhythm of the shutter, Dr. Ng Sing Yee has found her unique balance. She is a doctor beneath the white robe, facing life and death day after day; she is also a traveler behind the lens, seeking spiritual peace amidst the mountains and rivers and the humanities. The realities of medicine and the poetry of photography coexist harmoniously in her life, complementing each other.

|Doctor and Photographer ~

"Photography is not about the camera, but about the eye." — Elliott Erwitt

In her medical practice, she faces blood and tears, helplessness and hope. Every moment in the emergency room is filled with intense power and the weight of compassion. Yet, when she put down her stethoscope and picked up her camera, another world slowly unfolded—a world of slow light and shadow, quiet street corners, and soothing scenery.

Precisely because of her frequent encounters with life and death, she has a deeper understanding of capturing the preciousness of tranquility. Photography has become her "self-healing," a way to find balance between light and shadow even after life's turbulent upheavals.

|Moment and Eternity~

"Photography is about capturing eternity in a moment." —Henri Cartier-Bresson

Dr. Ng Sing Yee's work is not about complexity, but about simplicity and profound emotion. Her lens favors both nature and humanity, pursuing a breathtaking beauty: images calling out to the vast land and mountains, abstract light and shadow under the shadows of trees, the smiles of ethnic minorities, a dim old lamp on a street corner, black-and-white photos of an old building and its interior tables and chairs, radiant golden reflections—all of these images convey her unique perspective.

During a trip to Sabah to observe a lunar eclipse, she forgot her telephoto lens and missed the expected crimson moon, but in return, she gained a more precious night sky. Midsummer's deep blues and purples intertwined, stars twinkled, and shooting stars streaked across the sky. She held her breath, focused, and with the click of her shutter, she transformed this unexpected miracle into a poem of the soul. That night, she understood that photography is never just a plan, but a gift of chance, a trace left behind by the universe's whisper.

|Travel and Humanity ~

"I don't photograph appearances, I photograph their souls." - Richard Avedon

Walking through the city's historic districts, her camera captures the textures of time. The stacked old houses, the mottled walls, the old lanterns lining the alleys—in her lens, they convey not decay but the poetry of time. Still lifes of jars and dried flowers on old windowsills seem to tell the story of the passing seasons.

Her photographic travels not only capture the natural landscape but also carefully examine the relationships between people and objects. Whether it's a flicker of light piercing through leaves or a tranquil face, her images imbue the viewer with a warm, humanistic presence. Her photographs are like whispers, slow yet sincere, touching the depths of the soul.

|The Weight of Medicine, the Lightness of Photography~

The world of a doctor is often burdensome. The trials of birth, aging, illness, and death demand calmness and perseverance, enduring immense mental pressure. But as she says, the wisdom of Buddhism and the beauty of photography enable her to navigate these spiritual challenges.

In the emergency room, she races against time; through photography, she reconciles with it. The world captured by the lens is another form of spiritual practice for her, both an outward exploration and an inward return. Photography allows her to rediscover tranquility and pass it on to others.

|The Poetry of Light and Shadow~

"You don't take a photograph, you make it." — Ansel Adams

In Dr. Ng Sing Yee's world, photography is never simply a mechanical "record," but a spiritual "artistic creation." She doesn't capture perfect images that don't reflect her true self, but rather uses her camera to express her true feelings. Her photographs are poems written in light and shadow, a meditation on her journey, and a reflection of the heart of a healer.

The white robe and the lens, two seemingly parallel paths, intertwine in her to create a unique canvas of life. Her work reminds us that "beyond the hustle and bustle, there exists a tranquility, the breath of the soul between light and shadow."

Ng Sing Yee

Dr. Ng is a physician based in Kuala Lumpur whose life balances between two worlds—the urgent, fast-paced intensity of medicine and the quiet, contemplative beauty of art.

On the frontline, she dedicates herself to healing others, but beyond the hospital walls, she turns to photography as a way to heal herself. With an explorer’s spirit and a traveler’s heart, she wanders through landscapes, cities, and hidden corners of the world, seeking not just images, but stories of stillness and harmony.

Through her lens, she transforms fleeting moments into timeless reflections—sunlight filtered through leaves, the quiet rhythm of waves, the silhouettes of distant horizons. Photography, for her, is both a journey outward into the world and inward toward peace, a way of discovering serenity amidst the noise of life.

Beyond her personal pursuits, Dr. Ng is also actively engaged in the arts community. She contributes to be part of the curatorial team at IMPSART, an online platform dedicated to artistic exchange, and has exhibited her work in several online exhibitions.
