Preface

When figurative artworks are showcased, transforming through the integration of rich classical literary erudition and imagistic aesthetic techniques with spaces of imagination, they fully interpret the ethereal beings of women found in classical literature, encompassing their melancholy and sorrow, or the vividly conveyed emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness. Sometimes capturing the fleeting smile and longing gaze, these paintings deeply reflect the inner spiritual language of women's eyes and the profound embodiment in the Chinese classical literature "Dream of the Red Chamber". The portrayal is often poetic and semi-abstract, thriving on the ambiguity of "likeness and unlikeness," "pleasure and displeasure," nurturing various expressions of melancholy to achieve a symbiosis of poetry within painting, and painting within poetry, thus endowing the figurative artworks with a lively essence.

The pure art of painting with an Eastern essence has always been rich in imagination and aesthetic perception, deeply rooted since ancient times. The painting art of Eastern artists is invariably influenced by the philosophical thoughts of Chinese philosophy, exploring the unity of humanity and nature through expressive brushwork, combining mental images of landscapes or figures, and creating scenes within the paintings that prioritize the lyrical ambiance and the transcendence of imagistic association space within the painter's mind.

The art of subtle beauty in Chinese Eastern creation is naturally a product of inspirational aesthetic association, where only imagistic painting can elevate the grandeur of associative space. The misty and tangible human forms paired with imagistic or semi-abstract backgrounds transcend the superficial layer. The canvas vibrates with poetic beauty, the interplay of light and shadow across different color blocks, creating dreamlike depictions of beautiful goddesses, their beauty enhanced by the restrained richness of oil painting's brushwork, manifesting sophistication and depth, speaking volumes of the artist's profound artistic flair and context through endlessly changing images.

Professor Xing Jianjian's oil paintings have always conveyed an effortless charm and richness. His mastery of brushwork and color use is evident, likely nurtured through extensive reading and daily practice, demonstrating his ability to blend female figures' unique traits and dynamics within the atmosphere, exhibiting a certain artistic temperament and the captivating charm of expressive naturalness. Particularly noteworthy is Professor Xing's recent "Spring Dreams of Jinling" series, where he vividly translates his perceptions and inquiries of female characters from "Dream of the Red Chamber" into the paintings, enriching the thematic imagery with textual interpretations.

The jade with a slight flaw is the most attractive one.

Even seduced by Artemis would be a mistake,

who can refuse it?

Does the shriveling of persimmons remind you of

the shortness of life?

The smoke of incense always causes homesickness.

The beautiful face of a girl is just like a red flower.

Where the bird flies to is where the Flora lives.

The bird in the birdcage is the same as the man in love.

The shortness of fireworks does not hinder

its permanent beauty.

Can the cat's eyes lead you to enter into a magic land?

Can we postpone the end of a dance?

What she whispered under the plantain was the poem for you.

What is full in my dream is your well-known form.

Does the story that the flower tells end with withering?

Whether the butterfly in his past life knew the flower's company in his afterlife?

Did the day want to stay when he said goodbye to the night?

Was the jade transformed from your tears that you

sent him as a gift?

Is the long night waiting for the company of the dream?

Is the rainbow the image you present to me with water?

Can the love be found in the painting

if the language cannot be spoken?

Who will possess the purest flowers?

Does the shadow know that she cannot live

without light the same as I can't live without you?

Will the wind shed tears when the fan breaks?

Is that what the wind tells you that love is what she looks like?

Is that you at the other end of the mirror?

The "Spring Dreams of Jinling" series showcases female figures enriched with the painter's inner dialogue, blending classical and modern elements to create a richly diverse representation of beauty, from noble dreamlike figures in classical Western gowns or Chinese attire to the ethereal grace of delicate beauties. Some paintings capture the elusive beauty in a smile, the tenderness of their gaze, or the sorrow and brightness in their eyes, all contributing to an elegant and intellectual aura. These depictions of unattainable goddesses linger in the artist's heart, embodying a yearning for beauty, their every movement supported by the graceful melody of a violin or cello, surrounded by romantic floral fragrances, presenting a beauty that is beyond physical reach, perhaps a reflection of the artist's deep-seated adoration.

Xing Jianjian's openness and rich foundation in Eastern cultural thought, combined with his relaxed nature, echo his belief that painting stems from love. Life, composed of a series of choices and paintings, is about embracing the moments of inspiration that come with ease and tranquility. Choosing to paint beautiful women as a way to pass time, Xing finds satisfaction in the continued functionality of his eyes and hands, considering himself fortunate to have both the time and mood for painting. His works, marked by a freedom of brushwork and rhythm, stand as a testament to his ability to capture moments of inspiration, making every day fulfilling and pleasant. Amidst the blurring definitions of art, Xing's clear passion for painting and the immutable elements of his life shine through.

Xing Jianjian's continuous exploration of his own style and the forms of pure artistic expression showcases his understanding that the essence and spiritual language conveyed through color and brushwork transcend all. He believes that a truly impactful artwork vibrates with an indescribable vitality, drawing from memories and a sense of distance to original aesthetic pleasures in our living spaces. Each image, refined and elevated by Xing, becomes a pure visual delight, allowing viewers to escape the harsh realities of life and indulge in serene beauty, where the interplay of shapes and spaces, traversing different times, reveals a truth and illusion within the painting, showcasing how memories and spaces can be invoked or traversed at will.
